Disulfide Bond Reduction & Oxidative Neutralization Chemistry

Permanent hair texturizing changes the physical architecture of the hair cortex. The hair fiber is initially treated with an alkaline reducing agent—predominantly ammonium thioglycolate (ATG) at pH 9.0 to 9.5—which swells the cuticle and cleaves approximately one-third of the structural cystine disulfide (-S-S-) bonds into free sulfhydryl (-SH) groups, making the hair limp and pliable.

Once wrapped into the desired tension around rods, a hydrogen peroxide neutralizer (oxidizer) is applied. The neutralizer halts the chemical reduction and re-bonds the free sulfur atoms in their new curled geometry. The historic ’48-hour no-washing’ rule remains biochemically valid: newly formed bonds require up to 48 hours of atmospheric oxidation to stabilize their tensile matrix.

Perm SystemActive Chemistry & pH RangeCurl Pattern & Hair Type Fit
Alkaline Cold PermAmmonium thioglycolate (pH 9.0 – 9.6)Strong, bouncy curls; Best for coarse, resistant natural hair
Acid Perm (Heat Activated)Glyceryl monothioglycolate (pH 6.5 – 7.5)Soft, natural wave pattern; Best for fine, delicate, or tinted hair
Digital / Ceramic PermMild chemical reduction + thermal electronic rodsSoft, loose natural beach waves; Most popular in Asian hair texturizing
Body WaveLarge diameter flexible rods with mild alkaline solutionVoluminous lift and loose bends rather than tight spiraled curls

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't you wash your hair for 48 hours after a perm?

Washing hair with water or shampoo too soon dilutes the acidic neutralizing phase before all cleaved disulfide bonds have finished reforming into their new curled configuration, causing the perm to prematurely relax and fall flat.

Can you get a perm if your hair has been bleached?

In most cases, no. Bleaching strips melanin by oxidizing the cortex, breaking up to 40% of disulfide bonds; subjecting bleached hair to further alkaline thioglycolate reduction can cause catastrophic hair melting, mushiness, and severe breakage.

How long does a modern perm last?

A professional modern perm generally lasts between 4 and 6 months, depending on hair length, texture, and care routine. While the chemically altered hair retains its curl permanently, new hair growing from the scalp will emerge in your natural texture.
